Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley has a rich history dating back to the early 1900’s. The Russian River was chosen by early settlers as a place to plant vineyards, grow wine grapes, and begin logging of the huge redwood trees. The moderate temperature, sun, and excellent soil – much like Napa Valley Wine Country – make it the ideal place to grow wine grapes. A railroad was built where River Road now lies, and various camps, restaurants, hotels and leisure facilities were built to accommodate both workers and vacationers.
