Jamaica, Vermont is located at the junction of West River and Ball Mountain Brook. The village of Jamaica is the essence of Vermont. It's 50 square miles sitting in the heart of the Green Mountains. Chartered in November of 1780, the town's original charter bears the names of many of Vermont's founding fathers, including the first governor, Thomas Chittenden. Located in Windham County, the town is home to 754 residents. Most people think of the Caribbean when they hear Jamaica, but in reality the name comes from the Natick word for "beaver." Only one other town in Vermont derives its modern name from its native name: Winooski, which in Abinaki for "wild onions." Local points of interest are Stratton and Mount Snow ski areas, both within 20 minutes of the village. Jamaica State Park offers camping and hiking on 689 acres. Attractions in Brattleboro and Manchester are easily accessible via scenic Route 30.
