At the fairgrounds, a giant 32-foot-high replica of Vincent van Gogh’s famous sunflower painting rises on an 80-foot easel, a tribute to Kansas’ status as the Sunflower State. Less than an hour north of Goodland, hike and mountain-bike quiet country roads dotted with yucca and prairie flowers throughout the rugged Arikaree Breaks, a cluster of badlands along the Arikaree River.
