Pikes Peak is perhaps the most famous mountain in Colorado with Garden of the Gods as its gateway from the east. Zebulon Pike first saw the peak and noted it in his journals in 1806. By 1858 the expression "Pikes Peak or Bust" was the slogan of wagon trains heading west to find their fortunes. By the 1870's, and the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, William Palmer (founder of Colorado Springs) and Dr. Bell (founder of Manitou Springs) promoted the area to attract new residents and visitors.
