Lawson Overbey Inn
Danville, Virginia
Lawson Overbey Inn is a bed & breakfast located in Danville.
Situated as the lead mansion on Danville's "Millionare's Row", this home is both imposing and impressive. The home was constructed by contractor/designer T.B. Fitzgerald for tobacco clerk R.W. Lawson. After only three years, Mr. Lawson died and the home was purchased by Sallie E. Shepherd who lived here until 1904. Her Grandson, William Daniel Overbey thereafter acquired the property and he and his wife, "Sister Mae" Hutchinson, made it their home for 50 years. In 1972, a permit to raze the home was obtained to make room for a service station. John and his wife Doris DeAlba saved the home from destruction and completed a five year restoration of the house. In 1977, Mr. William T. Fowlkes, retired CIA, and his wife, noted dance instructor/performer, Martha Fowlkes purchased the home and lived here for twenty-five years. The current owners continue the restoration effort and operate the inn as a Bed and Breakfast and entertainment site.
Entry to this fabulous mansion is gained by swinging wide the outer double wooden doors and passing through inner double doors with Belgian lace pressed between double glass panels. Ahead lies a sixty foot long, nine foot wide center hallway. Double French doors allow entry into sitting parlors to the left and right. Proceeding further, the next doors lead to a formal parlor and sunroom on the left and the music room/bar area on the right. Next, enter into the formal dining room adorned with Anaglypta-textured wallpaper where wonderful lunches, afternoon teas, dinners, and evening parties have been frequently provided by resident owner/cook Cindy Castle.
The thirteen foot ceilings with ceiling medallions and elaborate plaster moldings throughout are complimented by the inlaid wooden flooring in each room. Beautiful hand blocked and colored Bradbury and Bradbury wallpapers have been carefully selected to accentuate many of the rooms. A large bathroom, complete with finger sink, foot tub, traditional sink and tub, toilet and circular shower with rain shower and needle spray make it extremely unique.
Upstairs boasts two suites and one single bedroom, each with private bath. Each room is spacious and consists of period conscience furnishings. For the convenience of our guests, air conditioners and ceiling fans have been added, as well as cable television, alarm clock and high speed wireless DSL internet access.
