Fort Buchanan is a US Army Base located in Guaynabo and Bayamón, Puerto Rico. It was established in 1923, and in 1999 became the headquarters for United States Army South. Major General Alfred Valenzuela commanded USARSO, but in 2003 the USARSO headquarters were moved to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Today Fort Buchanan is the home of the 1st Mission Support Command and 2/348th Theater Support Brigade. Fort Buchanan supports the US Army Reserve, the Puerto Rico National Guard and the US Army. US Federal agencies in Puerto Rico also use Fort Buchanan as a support center.
