Applegate in the heart of the Berkshires, was built in the grand era of the 1920's by a New York surgeon for use as a summer estate. It is set on a park-like 6 acre country estate one half mile from the historic town of Lee and about 3 miles from Stockbridge. Once inside the iron gate, the circular drive gives you the first views of Applegate's sweeping manicured lawns and towering trees. The huge fragrant lilac bushes line the driveway and serve to separate the lawns into deliberate garden areas. The rose gardens, perennial beds, fruit orchard and vegetable garden provide interest all year. As you rest in one of the several large hammocks you might get a glimpse of "Gloria's Secret Garden". It invites you to walk in this shade garden or to stop to read on a stone bench. Each season offers you a wonderful view of nature in an estate setting.
The entrance to the Inn is a spacious foyer furnished with plush carpets, a grandfather clock and other fine antiques. To one side of the foyer is the formal living room with several sitting areas, large fireplace and baby grand piano.
This is the setting for the popular nightly wine and cheese reception. Adjacent to the living room is the less formal sun parlor divided into TV and games areas. The best views of the golf course across the road are from this room.
There are large bowls of fine candies, fruit and nuts throughout the common rooms. Across the length of the main house is a screened porch with views of the heated swimming pool and the lawns and gardens behind it.
