My wife and I stayed at Tukumtu on the final leg of our honeymoon in Quebec and New England. We were looking for a relaxing and charming place to unwind and Tukumtu seemed to fit the bill perfectly. The description online and the high price seemed to suggest something special.

Positives: The breakfasts were delicious. The Rose Cottage was pleasantly rustic and the bedding was extremely comfortable. The location was very nice, right along Rangeley Lake, with a nice dock and comfortable places to sit and enjoy the views of the water and the loons and ducks swimming by. We were happy to be able to borrow kayaks and paddle out to a few islands on the first day.

Negatives: The cabin did not seem very clean- there were cobwebs everywhere and some kind of rodent poop on the porch. The innkeeper Birgitta seemed preoccupied with the restaurant that she just opened in town (which is excellent, by the way.) Having rented the cabin, we weren't sure whether we were allowed into the main house and since the owner was out a lot of the time and she had never clarified that we could go in, (even for the pool table and ping pong tables that we could see from behind a locked door, stacked with junk) we assumed that we were to stick to our cabin. We were OK with this and understood that she was busy. What we did NOT understand, was why we wouldn't have been invited into the main B & B for showers (there were no other guests, mind you) when the hot water did not work in our cabin and we had just had a swim in the lake. On our second and final day at Tukumtu, we found ourselves asking "do you think Birgitta likes us?" It sounds silly, but our question was answered not two hours later when we were forwarded an email from Adam's MOTHER (who had previously contacted the B&B about paying for our first dinner there as a wedding present) accusing us of stealing a bathrobe. "One of my robes are missing...If they wanted one I could have sold them a robe." We promptly called Brigitta and told her that it was hanging on the hook on the back on the door. And it was.
In retrospect, it seemed that the owner maybe rents the cabin on occasion but has absolutely no interest in running a B&B. For $350 a night, we had expected a bit more attention and comfort. We were good guests. We folded the towels. We used coasters. We paid for our own damn honeymoon, and we can pay for our own damn bathrobes.
