Probably used to be a 4-star hotel but no longer meets that standard. Still very nice with mid-century charm. Location is great for business travel but too far away from popular areas for tourist travel. Most annoying thing is that they charge (a lot) for every little thing. Parking and Internet access is ridiculously expensive.
Positives: Beautiful old building with mid-century charm and style.
Negatives: Nickel and dimmed us for every little thing...really annoying. Not a great location for tourists.

Hotel is overrated in my opinion. Front desk staff was not helpful. Room was not very clean. Their in room concierge system is a useless gimmick.
Positives: Absolutely nothing.
Negatives: Front desk staff was not helpful. Room was not very clean. Their in room concierge system is a useless gimmick.

Front desk and bell staff great. Great rooms, great location very beautiful property.
Positives: Location, and amenities.
Negatives: Housekeeping did not do the best job for stay over. That was only non friendly employees.

The room was very clean and comfortable. We didn't spend time in the room except to sleep.
Positives: Beds were very comfortable.
Negatives: Had to pay extra for internet and weight room. The pool closed too early.

Overall the hotel was pleasant. The hotel staff was friendly and made us feel welcome. Our room had two bathrooms which was nice. Our room faced the lake, which was a plus! A major downside to this hotel was that they didn't have free WiFi in our hotel room, and the hotel parking was expensive.
Positives: I liked the friendly service we received during our stay. I also liked how the hotel accommodated us when our initial room was not satisfactory.
Negatives: Our initial room had the smell of mold and smoke residue, so I did not like that. I also did not like the hotel rates for parking.

We loved our room, two bathrooms was very nice and our view was stunning! We did not care for being interrupted by housekeeping four different times telling us that our room was supposed to be empty. One situation happened when a maid knocked on our door at 11 p.m. at night, and we had to go down to the front desk to make sure that there was miscommunication.
Positives: Good location and love the history of it!
Negatives: Bathrooms were not as up-to-date as I would like.

Excellent; friendly staff.

This hotel was great for all! Two bathrooms in one room.:)
Positives: I enjoyed the pool and great facilities.
Negatives: That I would have had to pay more to get a room with a king or queen bed.

I would have stayed another night at the rate that I paid for the first night. They would not allow it. So I went to another hotel.
Positives: It was our 40th anniversary and they gave us a wonderful room.
Negatives: Parking was more expensive than any other hotel in the area.

Best location possible! We paid $25 extra for a lake view room -- so worth it.
Positives: Customer service moved us right away when our next door neighbors were too loud.
Negatives: This is a historic hotel so rooms tend to be small and a bit dusty. Also, there are extra charges for every little thing.

An attractive property due to the location across from Grant Park, right on Michigan Ave. Different levels of rooms - mine was dated, some were more modern. Good AC.
Positives: The pool/ fitness center was top notch.
Negatives: My room was dark w/no view.

The hotel is located in a great neighborhood, the rooms are spacious and clean.<BR/>I highly recommend parking in a lot across from the hotel it is significantly cheaper, and that makes this hotel less appealing.
Positives: The decor was old school and was rich in history.
Negatives: The parking for a hotel guest is $43 for 24 hours, that isn't a typo it is $43.

This hotel was the very first Hilton location and you can tell, they have kept that days gone by charm while still having updated amenities and facilities. The ballroom was beautiful and open for guests to explore. They also had a huge conference area available. The hotel is huge but in the best way, nothing feels too far away and everything is accessible to guests. The drawbacks were that the parking was grossly expensive and they did not provide free in-room wireless internet access, in todays society that is a must not a bonus. The restaurant staff were terrible and very rude, I felt like ordering our $60 breakfast was an inconvenience to them, and at that price it had better not be! All in all it was a nice stay but they could improve on staff training and amenity pricing.
Positives: The fact that this was a historical location and the very first Hilton. It felt very nostalgic.
Negatives: The parking was outrageous, no free wireless, restaurant staff were VERY rude.

Our check in was cold and unfriendly compared to others I saw. Our shower curtain was covered with mold. Very noticeable mold. We had three towels per bathroom on arrival. After they would only give two. We had white sheets and comforters. The kids got some noticeable food stains on both comforters and sheets. After day three they were still putting same ones on the beds. You could easily see the stains. I asked for clean sheets when we decided to extend our stay. They did not change them even then. I called the desk and the housekeeper arrived with quilts in a large garbage bag and dropped it in the floor. She had extra sheets and was very sarcastic about changing linens. I felt like if we were not price slime customers the service e would have been better. And the concierge couldn't be bothered. Very unfriendly. We will not return to this Hilton. Horrible service and room quality for a four star hotel. Not even a small fridge for leftovers.
Positives: Its history.
Negatives: Terrible service. Treated like we were lower class.

The staff was very nice and helpful during our recent stay in Chicago. We enjoyed the experience and will be back again.
Positives: The friendly staff and security of staying there.
Negatives: Kinda smaller rooms compared to other places we have stayed for the same price or less.

Beautiful! The view of the city from our room was great! Very comfortable and perfect for our needs.
Positives: The location, comfort and beauty.
Negatives: The elevators made us uneasy. They shook moderately.

The Hilton was built during the grand days of the 20s. Read it's fascinating history online. The lobby, staircases, and grand ballroom still retain the original luxury. I found the staff helpful and friendly. Our room was spacious, nice bathroom with quality hairdryer, comfortable bed and pillows. An el train ran about a block away, and woke me up every morning. But that's Chicago. For the Priceline rate, I would stay here again.
Positives: The grand lobby with enormous Christmas tree & walk in gingerbread house.
Negatives: Too many extra fees, WiFi, phone and

Beautiful hotel for a one night getaway with the wife.
Positives: Classic charm.
Negatives: Room was a bit dusty - clean otherwise.

Overall, the hotel was nice. Staff was friendly. They could work on their cleaning services though. The room looked like it hadn't been dusted in over 3 weeks. We found an old bag of chips from a previous person staying in the room in one of the drawers. And, when they cleaned our room they never emptied any garbage cans. For a four star, I was not impressed.
Positives: They gave me a humidifier when asked for one.
Negatives: The room hadn't been dusted in probably weeks. Cleaning lady didn't empty garbage cans when cleaned room.

The hotel was clean and well kept. It has 2 restaurants and bars. It is an older hotel, so some people may not like the smaller rooms. Our room had great beds and pillows with down comforters. There were 2 full bathrooms. The TV was huge, there was a nice coffeemaker and a very nice clock radio. The hair dryer was also top shelf.
Positives: Room had 2 bathrooms, the beds and bedding were wonderful - huge TV.
Negatives: Distance to my theatre was annoying, but unavoidable.

Very large, formal hotel. Impressive ballrooms and conference facilities. Well decorated, great location. Restaurants and facilities were overpriced. Not very child friendly.
Positives: The price we got on Priceline was very good value. Nicely decorated foyer.
Negatives: Breakfast very expensive and average at best. Charging extra for gym. Very expensive Internet and in-room movies.

Good clean nice hotel. The room is very comfort and location is also quite accessible from the public transportation.
Positives: Very solid basic features as a hotel.

Negatives: No mini microwave.

I paid extra to have my room upgraded and was extremely unimpressed with the upgrade, I would not have wanted to see my original room. Everything you take for granted at other hotels has a cost at this one. Luggage storage, late checkout, coffee, Internet
Positives: Location
Negatives: Nickel and dimmed everything possible. Horrible upgrade.
Reviewer: Not provided on Wed 03 Nov 2010 rated 7 out of 10.
Our first room was clearly not ready for visitors. The lampshade was askew, one light bulb missing. The cover on the heater/AC unit was not fixed on the wall, but leaning against it and the shower seal was not set. When these deficiencies were pointed out, we got an upgrade with a lake view, and certificates for restaurants. This was an excellent customer service.
Positives: Prompt response to a request for shampoo.
Negatives: Our first room smelled of smoke.
Reviewer: Not provided on Mon 25 Oct 2010 rated 2 out of 10.
As a non-smoker who is allergic to cigarette smoke, I am astonished that this hotel still has whole smoking floors. Very disappointed with my accomodations. Once I got there, I had very little choice but to accept. I arrived at 9:40 PM, needed to leave by 8:00 AM, so I didn't have the luxury of rejecting the room.
Positives: Common areas business friendly.
Negatives: I suspect I got stuck in a smoking room.
Reviewer: Not provided on Mon 18 Oct 2010 rated 5 out of 10.
We were given a double on the smoking floor. The room did have two bathrooms, which was nice. We were hoping for a king, and were not thrilled about the smoking floor.
Positives: Location was great./
Negatives: The room.

We enjoyed the hotel, except the view out the window of the wall of the parking garage. Staff was friendly, and helpful.
Positives: Close to subway, and Millennium Park.
Negatives: Too far to walk to Magnificent Mile, but a short subway trip.

This hotel is indeed grand--huge and ornate. Our rooms were very nice and receptionist kindly arranged perfect adjoining rooms. Elevators were plentiful and fast. Unfortunately, we never found the pool or rooftop deck. Signs were lacking and we didn't have a lot of time to ask. The location is perfect for the loop and museums. You would need a bus or cab for further down Michigan, but still not too far.
Positives: Reception clerk so nice--arranged for adjoining rooms!
Negatives: Parking cost far exceeded that of other nearby lots.

A little far south but very historical. Our room was clean and fairly large but the desk was against the wall and only one chair.

Great venerable hotel. A true classic. Wonderful amenities. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone wanting a true "Chicago" experience.
Positives: Location
Negatives: No view other than the rooms across from us; but didn't spend that much time in room.

Overall great. The room was a tiny bit messy. One of the chairs had food on it and the refrigerator smelled and had hair in it. It seems that the staff rushed through cleaning it. But other that everything else was great.
Positives: The fitness area overall, especially the pool.
Negatives: The bed were on the small side.

Everything worked out well. We were with three other couples. The main problem was our room was across from the cleaning crew facility. The crew was talking loudly outside our door, early in the morning and woke us up.
Positives: Great location, went to a concert at Northerly Island.
Negatives: Our room was across the hall from the cleaning crew.

The Hilton is located in a beautiful, grand historic building. The hotel's location - just a short walk to museums, Grant Park, restaurants, etc. - is it's biggest plus. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.
Positives: Location - close to museums, Grant Park and restaurants.
Negatives: AC did not work efficiently and hence did not get comfortable sleep.

Hilton Chicago is in a great location, its much better than the the Palmer House. Rooms are small, its old and seems to need repair but other than that its a good deal.

We ordered food to be delivered, and were told we had to go down to get it - the delivery guy said he'd delivered there many times and this was the first time he'd ever been told that the guest had to go to the lobby to get their food.
Positives: Location.
Negatives: The hotel staff treated me poorly. Awful customer service.
